明けましておめでとうございます。
2025年、巳年を迎え、皆さまが健やかに新年をお迎えのことと存じます。

 

今年は一体、どのような年になるのでしょうか。
昨年は、世界的にも日本国内においても政治の変化が顕著な一年でした。
いわゆる「民意」が示され、既存の政治体制に「NO」が突き付けられた年ともいえます。
その一方で、ロシアや中国、さらには北朝鮮といった専制主義国家の動きが、民主主義国家の混迷と対比される形で際立っていたように感じます。
 
戦後から続く修正されない資本主義は、果たしてこれ以上拡大し続ける社会的格差を克服できるのでしょうか。また、自由や民主主義は、今後も輝きを放ち続けることができるのでしょうか。今年は、これらの問いが試される年であるように思います。
 
かつてのイギリスの名宰相、ウィンストン・チャーチルの名言に、「民主主義は最悪の政治形態と言われてきた。ほかに試みられたあらゆる形態を除けば」というものがあります。この機知に富んだ言葉を、改めて噛みしめています。
 

こうした状況の中で、ほぼ確実に言えることがあります。
それは、今年もまた夏の気温記録が更新され、昨年以上の暑さが訪れるであろうということです。温暖化というよりも、もはや「沸騰化」とも言える現象です。
パリ協定が掲げる、産業革命前からの気温上昇幅を「1.5度以内」に抑えるという目標があるにもかかわらず、このままでは数年内にその目標を超えてしまう可能性があります。この加速する温暖化は、もはや止めようのない状況にあります。
 
日本には、旧暦の時代から「二十四節気」という概念があり、春夏秋冬をそれぞれ15日ごとに分けて季節を感じる豊かな感性が受け継がれてきました。
それぞれの季節の始まりを示す立春、立夏、立秋、立冬は、新暦では次のような時期に当たります：
 
立春：2月4日頃
立夏：5月5日頃
立秋：8月8日頃
立冬：11月7日頃
 
しかし、現在の気候がこの暦からいかにかけ離れているかは、もはや言うまでもありません。
 
このような思いを胸に、少しでも地球が正常な状態に戻ることを願い、昨年私が四季ごとに撮影した写真を皆さまにお届けいたします。
 

最後にご紹介する写真は、昨年南淡路市を訪れた際に初めて見た鳴門の渦潮と、大地にかかる大きな虹です。人間の営みは、渦潮のように激しく変化し、時には苦しい状況が続くこともあります。ただ、そのような中でも、大地に大きな虹がかかる瞬間があるのです。
 

皆さまにも、今年、大きな虹がかかるよう祈念いたします。

■　2025 Greetings for the New Year　■

Happy New Year!
Stepping into 2025, the year of the “Snake,” I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits as we welcome the new year together.
 
What kind of year will this one be?
Last year, we witnessed significant political changes both globally and within Japan. The “will of the people” was expressed publicly, making it a year when the existing political system was told, “No.” Meanwhile, the actions of authoritarian regimes like Russia, China, and North Korea stood in stark contrast to the confusion within democratic nations.
 
The capitalism that has persisted since the post-war era-can it truly overcome the ever-growing social inequality?
Will freedom and democracy continue to shine as brightly as they have in the past? This year, it feels as though these questions will truly be put to the test.
 
Winston Churchill, the legendary British prime minister, once said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” His witty words are something I find myself reflecting on once again.
 

Amid all this, there is one thing I can say with near certainty: this year, too, we’ll likely see record-breaking summer temperatures, with the heat even more intense than last year. What we’re experiencing isn’t just global warming-it’s more like “global boiling.” Despite the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit temperature rise to within 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, we might exceed that limit in the next few years. The accelerating warming trend now seems beyond our control.
 

In Japan, there’s a tradition that traces back to the old lunar calendar-the concept of the “24 Solar Terms.” It divides the year into 24 periods of about 15 days, each marking a shift in the seasons and helping people feel more connected to the natural world. The start of each season is marked by these terms:
 
Risshun (Beginning of Spring): Around February 4
Rikka (Beginning of Summer): Around May 5
Risshu (Beginning of Autumn): Around August 8
Rittou (Beginning of Winter): Around November 7
 
However, it’s clear that the climate today is far removed from these dates.
With these thoughts in mind, I hope for the planet’s recovery, even if only a little. I’d like to share with you some photos I took last year, each representing a different season.
 

The final photo I would like to share with you is of the Naruto whirlpools, which I saw for the first time during my visit to Minami-Awaji City last year, along with a large rainbow stretching across the land.
Human activities, much like the whirlpools, undergo intense changes and can sometimes be accompanied by prolonged hardships. Even amidst such challenges, there are moments when a magnificent rainbow graces the earth.
 

I wish you to experience a great rainbow this year as well.
